‘Me space’ and ‘we space’ on Zoom

‘Me space’

‘Me space’

Zoom has become as normal in Covid-19 Lockdown as phoning was in the days before texting and messaging took over our lives.

For families and friends who haven’t been able to see each other these past few months, Zoom has been a lifeline.

Even the technophobes among us found our keenness to speak to each other, see each other, connect - over a family quiz, a cup of tea or a glass - means we’ve super-charged our openness to adopt the tech skills needed.

The Zoom funeral training our celebrants took part in showed that often in Zoom meet-ups, we can drift a bit… sit back in a ‘me space’… a bit disconnected from the group. (See photo above.)

‘We space’

‘We space’

The second photo (above) captures the difference it makes when the host invites participants to lean into the ‘we space’. Instantly, eyes light up, smiles comes out, suddenly, we felt like we were there with each other.

During a Zoom ceremony, people are encouraged to talk in the waiting room, share stories, look at each other and smile - just like a good funeral. Recorded and live music was played. Everyone can light a candle. You can give guidance about what to wear. You can invite guests to have a toast ready for the end of the ceremony. Noone has to miss out and it’s easy for everyone to join in.

So next time you’re online for a game of bingo or a chat with chums, try it for yourself. Lean in. Enjoy the ‘we space’.
